Gumulira Village Water Restoration (2024)

The national water coverage for Malawi is at 88.3% (National Water Policy 2023). It is also established that 30% of the existing water supply facilities are on breakdown at each point in time. This subjects the people of Malawi to high prevalence rate of water, sanitation and hygiene related diseases.
Gumulira village has been experiencing this problem for three years. 1,956 people have been drinking water from unprotected water sources. The unprotected water sources are shared with animals and are at a distance of more than 800 meters round trip from households.
The problem was once addressed in that a water supply system for the community was constructed and commissioned. However it did not take long for the water supply systems submersible pump to break down. At the time of breaking down the community had not collected adequate funds to repair it.
