The project
The aim is a feasibility report on using human urine as agricultural fertiliser. Urine contains roughly 80% of the nitrogen, 50% of the phosphorus and 60% of the potassium the body excretes – exactly the nutrients crops need.
This could cut the use of chemical fertilisers, which account for up to 1.2% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Innovative, sustainable ideas can bring about real change for people and the environment.
Scalable
In Ecuador 25% of farmers are smallholders facing high fertiliser costs. The approach could then spread across the whole Andean region.
- Lower environmental impact
- Circular economy
- Lower costs for farmers
- Better food security
